I ran out of eggs the other day and hubby bought me some from a local farm that sells eggs through our butcher. What surprised me was how big the eggs were. Much bigger than my own but also much bigger than those I used to get at the supermarket.

Which got me wondering. Which are the best breeds for those big eggs?

Hi Apps, Minorcas and Leghorns lay large eggs on a regular basis. Their eggs are also white.

Also, birds in their second or third or more year lay larger eggs than they did when younger. Basically, as a hen gets older, it lays fewer, larger eggs.

I think the largest eggs we ever had came from a largefowl brahma.
