What are these bugs???

Thanks so much for the reply!

Is there any kind of "waiting" period of for the consumption of eggs laid after treating the birds? If i dust thier vents i would think that this might be an issue.

I honestly don't know for sure. I've read 0-2 weeks, but it seems arbitrary depending on who you talk to and I haven't found anything definitive (and not sure that I will) on that. Since it's external and supposedly not residual/readily absorbed (same for poultry dust) supposedly, I think that the biggest issue would be the Sevin dust getting onto the eggs when they're laid....then you handle the eggs and may end up getting it on other food. However, keep in mind that both Sevin and Poultry Dust are listed/labeled for use on food plants.

So...

I'm setting my eggs laid since dusting apart right now until I decide what to do or can find more info. I'm thinking that washing them may be sufficient, but I'm still looking into it.

I don't know about Frontline and other pet meds like it. I've read that it works, but it's got to be significantly more expensive to do. Personally, I feel better using the Sevin or the Poultry dust since they are approved for food plants at least (though Sevin isn't listed for poultry). I'd never use either for my garden/food plants, though, and that's simply because it kills beneficial insects (like honey bees). Since the chickens don't need pollinating and the only bugs on them are parasites, I don't really have a problem. But that's also why you need to be careful about how much you use and how often, even on chickens.

I'd use ivermectin, since that is also used on humans. I don't think there is a human version of frontline.

As for toxicity, inhale enough DE dust, and you'll get a good case of miners lung.

I use poultry or sven dust myself, maybe once a year if I see an issue showing up. Two treatments two weeks apart won't hurt you with the short limited exposure. Now if you did it weekly year round, then you might have an issue. As with most things that are potentially poisionus, it's a combination of dose exposure and time exposed.

You can put them in a pillow case with alot of sevin dust in it. Their neck sticking out the top, with your hand grasping the neck and pillow case, gently "shake and bake." Remove the chicken from the pillow case and rub a little sevin with your fingers onto her head and neck areas. Avoid the eyes and nostrils. Then release her. She'll shake herself off and go about her business foraging. Wear old clothes, shoes, and mask. Repeat in 7-10 days. Ivermectin will not kill lice. Chicken lice do not suck blood, mites do. Cattle lice suck blood, different type of lice that chickens dont get.

Well I went out there to check them over again, only the smaller hen seems to ahve the worst case. She went and did a dust bath....in the mud. now shes a fright! What a mucky mess! She looks terrible! lol

I'll see if I can find the sevin powder, if it works it would be great, if not, Ill have to find an alternative. I'm trying not to use a million chemicals on them lol.

Even if one has it worse or you can't find any bugs on one of them, you should dust them all. They all roost together (presumably), so they're sharing parasites all of the time (unfortunately).

Well I went and bout some stuff from the feed store. Its says "sevin" very low down on the label. 5%

So I dusted them very carefully, I hope though i didnt use too little lol. I dusted under thier wings, around thier vents and between thier shoulder blades. I hope it works!!

Yeah I should ahve gotten pictures, but i cleaned her up already with a damp cloth. The roo went nuts when i handled his girls, he even ran at me, but i put my palm out and he ran like a wuss lol I hope he doesnt get mean with all this handling Im doing to his girls!

Oh, rough house those girls and "palm to the face" that rooster till he understands you are top roo. That's good you didn't let him get any idea he could attack you. Nip that behavior in the bud!

Good luck with the sevin dust. Just remember to follow up treatment at least once.
