What are these?

What are these little groupings? I can wipe it off and it's gritty. I've never seen this before on my birds. Sometimes a calcium deposit bump but this is different. Is it another type of calcium buildup? Its a newer layer.

That looks more like pimples than sandpaper eggs. If you look through the Egg Quality Guide you'll see some of the pretty common abnormalities you can get.

This is written more for commercial operations than for us so don't read too much into the causes. A lot of that does not really apply to us.

This stuff is more common in pullets just starting to lay. Some grow out of it, some don't. This does not affect the quality of the egg, it is perfectly safe to eat. It just doesn't look good for sale in an egg carton.
