what are those circular metal attachy things called?

I bought some of the lightweight ones to attach my hardware cloth to the welded wire the other day. They were at the feed store with the rabbit stuff and were called "Cage Clips". They are kind of hard to clamp down without the special $10 tool they sell for them, though I'm making do with my fence pliers.

i used to use pieces of wire to connect hardware cloth or other metal to metal objects. Then tried hog rings. But now i use cable ties, those plastic tie things that slip one end into the other and ratchet down. i should have bought stock in cable ties, i use them so much.

the squirels in my area like to eat plastic, so if zip ties work for you thats great. but if others go to try it I would just watch out for chewing.

The sun degrades the plastic zip ties here in no time. So I use those as a third hand to hold stuff in place while I put on some hog rings as a permanent fastener.

I use them for everything in the chicken yards. The hog ring pliers work great.
