What are you adding to your flock this year?

Oh how I wish we had more land….a bantam coop would come next, and a few smaller breed pens for fertile eggs and heritage chick hatching!

And ducks. I think I would have a new obsession with a few ducks. ❤️

Someday…maybe when I retire…

Fun idea for a thread. Congrats on getting it featured. I would like to stop supporting the hatchery industry and I am so thrilled to have found a local breeder. She only carries a few breeds, and expects chicks in about three weeks or so. I’m hoping to get to each of Isabella Leghorns and French Blue Copper Marans.

Hmmm - what about chicken math??? Shall we check back with you in a few months? :)
Nah I have late fall chicks that just started laying and more eggs than I can eat. 12 chickens is plenty for me right now. I'd like to get rid of a few before I consider adding more.

I hear you! I have 12 hens but 3 are elderly so they are pretty much lawn ornaments. And of course those silkies while they lay lot swhen not broody, they go broody about 3 times in the summer! So while I get lots of eggs at times, other times hardly any!

I will be staking out the local feed store which is supposed to get 25 Sapphire Olive Egger chicks the second week of April.

But what if they don't arrive? What if I get there too late and someone else gets them all (I only want two)? Gee, maybe I better try to snag a couple of the Sapphire Splash chicks the first week of April, just in case? Well, if I miss all the Czech girls, maybe I can get a couple of my long-sought-after Dominiques later in April.

And, that my friends, is how my chicken math works and why I had to spend a fortune two years ago to build what is fondly referred to as The Taj Ma-Coop.
