What are you adding to your flock this year?

My grandson, Maverick, insists that we are getting some BUCKEYE chicks this year. My SIL claims she wants to re-home her remaining 4 chickens - leghorns and a banty roo(?) at my place so she can start over next spring with meat birds. My granddaughter, Gypsy, wants me to get some 'pretty' chickens (favors OEGs).

Me? I'd really like a bigger coop before adding too many more birds. Of course -- as the grandchildren keep reminding me -- we can eat a couple of the current hens so there is room for new ones. Sigh!

All I am sure of at this time is the spring arrival of Buckeyes. And then what do I do with my wonderful Monte?

I am planning to get some RIR and BSLs this year, I had a really good winter with a group like this a couple years ago. My current flock (a mixed assortment of breeds) has not layed good since early fall. I have never had a flock lay so poorly in fall/early winter, so I am gonna go back to the breeds I know best.

This year, my plan is to switch to almost all bantams! (Except for my new trio of large fowl Buckeyes--those are my hubby's favorites)

I'm relocating the three large fowl chickens to the A-frame coop, which is plenty big for three chickens, and then the little bantams are all going to get to live in the big hen house! Which means I can have LOTS more!

EXCITED!

I would LOVE to add some dark brahma hens!! Oh... and some more EE's.... and maybe a few more delaware's... Now... how to break it to the DH that I need a bigger coop... LOL!! Oh and a friend of mine is going to hatch some of my barnyard mix eggs too!!! LOL!!! I'm starting to get this chicken math!~

I want some new silkies & orps!!

I was really excited about getting ours last year. We got 1 male and 2 females. However, they turned out to be really poor quality. The females had black coloring all throughout, and the male looked like a combination of 12 different roosters. My wife calls him "Frankenrooster". Still, they are some of our friendliest chickens. Would like to get some more if I could find good quality.

Glad to see so much interest in Buckeyes. We got our first two last year- both pullets. We love their rich dark mahoganey color, and they have very interesting personalities. They don't seem to be afraid of anything. Looking forward to getting a roo and two more pullets this year.

So glad you brought this up!

From Mt. Healthy: 50 straight run Speckled Sussex and 25 assorted free cockerels

From McMurray: 9 assorted bantam chicks, 5 Speckled Sussex cockerels, 10 Cornish X Rocks, 10 Red Star pullets, 10 Buff Orpington pullets, plus one free surprise chick.

Can't wait! My first time raising chicks and keeping chickens. Wish my Mom was still alive to share the fun with me as I pass on what she taught me to our 8 kids! The chicks are coming mid Feb if all goes as planned. In the meantime I'm making my list for necessary supplies and readying the brooder. The kids all got to choose their own bantam for Christmas from McMurray's catalog -- fun!
