What are you baking now?

Yeah, Edgar Allen Poe is a little hardcore even for most adults although they've done Hunger Games and Twilight so??? What books did they read as a group? Maybe you could take clues from them. Or just think of food they'll eat and try to pair it with a book.

I baked 4 kinds of cookies for my writing class on Saturday - molasses, snickerdoodle, no-bakes with coffee, and chocolate chip brownies. They disappeared so I guess they were good.

I made some sweet potato biscuits last night. I have never even had sweet potato biscuits before, let alone made them. They are really quite good!

I used Paula Deen's recipe because it used regular flour and I believe the other recipes I checked used self rising and I didn't have any. I also just got myself new glasses and they happen to be Paula Deen...I think they are rubbing off on me.

Anyway, what recipes do all of you have for sweet potato biscuits and do the biscuits made with self rising flour have a better flavor?

I hope none of you southerners hate me for mentioning Paula Deen..it seems as though many people get offended when she's mentioned..I just can't help myself...I like her recipes. BUT since I know there's lots of you from the south, I'm betting you have some really yummy recipes.

Here's a link.

mm sweet potato biscuits sound good :) I made some raisin filled cookies tonight, my grammys recipe. They were gone within 20 mins of them cooling.. now Im gonna have to make more tomorrow, probably a double batch.
I can send the recipe to anyone who wants it, I had to get a new copy of hers tonight, I've tried some of the recipes online & they arent near as good.

As soon as I saw "raisin filled," I knew you were from Pennsylvania. It seems as though people from other states don't know what raisin cookies are.

really? haha.. thats funny,I didnt realize they were regional till recently. I mentioned them to my friend in Utah & she cant comprehend it either. She insists its a pie, but wants to try the recipe to make these "raisin cookie pies" lol.. I hadnt had them in years, my gram HATES making them for some reason, but we have a lil amish bakery up the road, I go there for my weekly whoopie pie (they make amazing coconut ones) and they had raisin filled cookies.. Not near as my grammys so I got her recipe, and made them. My friend in Utah thought that pig stomach & chicken & waffles were completely absurd too, she just dont know what shes missing. Im guessing its a dutch thing? The Amish sure are geniuses with baking & cooking though. Where are you at in PA?

I'm up in Mckean County, we don't have any Amish settlements RIGHT here, they're all an hour or so away, so I'm totally jealous that you have Amish bakeries to go to. I love Amish people so very much!

I've met a ton of people from other areas of the state, even down near Pittsburgh, and of course other states, that don't know what raisin cookies are. I personally don't eat them because I'm super picky, but everyone in my family loves them. They are always going to be at family parties, both my grandmas make them. I've never tried to make them, I should get my "better cook" grandma's recipe.

Do you eat the purple pickled eggs? Made with beets, vinegar, onion and garlic? The first time my college friends saw those, they started worrying about me. Oh and my canned venison.

I just did a quick search because now I'm curious about these cookies...found this link...it says it's fashioned after a British pastry, but if you read the comments, it's all Pennsylvanians mentioning the Amish.

Is Mckean county where Towanda is? We used to camp up there at Riverside acres I believe it was called, its on the susquehanna, near Bradford. When they struck oil there they raised their prices heavily, so my pap found a closer campground. I am in State College, well close to it. I moved to Delaware for 2 years and the Amish bakeries were what I missed the most,(and Middleswarth chips & gardeners candies) Although its getting pretty dangerous lol, this one serves the best grilled chicken ever, every saturday lol and the bakery is just too close to avoid. Growing up, my mom was good friends with one of the Amish families and I used to ride around in their buggies with them. I did make friends with the Amish that runs the one store and his wife gave me a chocolate chip cookie recipe, it was amazing, only problem is, it makes 30 dozen! I have to scale it back. You should get the recipe from her! Im starting to stockpile my grams recipes because the online recipes just dont taste as good. I havent ever had canned meat, that wasnt something that my family did. I was talking to my fiances dad last night, and we were talking about canning and he said that he cans all meat and was telling me how to can it. He gave me some elk meat to practice with haha. If my fiance can shoot a deer I will def be making canned venison, he didnt do so well last year. I refuse to hunt any longer, a friend had taken in a sick deer & rehabilitated it, and I spent alot of time with it, I dont have the heart anymore, but I will eat the meat :). Pickled eggs, lol are they regional too? I never had the guts to try them growing up, because they were called "picked" and I hate sour. I tried one on memorial day and It didnt have much flavor. I dont think my gram adds onion and garlic because it pretty much just tasted like a hard boiled egg with a little red beet. There are so many foods people think I am weird for eating.
Yeah thats weird that it came from Britain, I always thought it was an Amish thing, like whoopie pies, but who knows they could have started somewhere else too. Maybe the amish just adapted the british version into their own. I'll do some research when I get back from the post office about them :) I believe I have some quail eggs sitting at the post office for me, dont want them to sit too long :)

I just looked up Towanda, heard of it, just don't know where it is...apparently it's in Bradford County. I'm about 20 minutes from Bradford the city. I'm along the NY border, but only 2 counties away from Erie...by 2 counties, I really mean 2 hours. I'm middle of nowhere PA...Allegheny National Forest...Kinzua dam and bridge. Oh oh! The Finding Bigfoot episode filmed in PA was filmed here!

The canned meat thing is because the majority of us are hunters around here so it's pretty common. At our county fair each year, I always check out the canned meat...usually I find chicken, venison, and rabbit.
I need to get a lot of my grandma's recipes, the problem is, half the stuff she makes she doesn't have recipes for...she just guesses. I can't do that.
lol.png
Some people make the beet pickled eggs and add sugar, I think those ones are disgusting, but I love garlic so the other recipe is what I prefer.

I can't even describe how jealous I am that you got to hang out with Amish people and ride in the buggies and stuff. So. Jealous.

Yeah, I wasnt sure where it was exactly, but I knew it was by the NY border because we used to go to Tioga park & thats in NY, and it wasnt too far. Ive heard of Kinzua dam but Ive never been there. Lol no not bigfoot! haha my fiance is obsessed with bigfoot! He insists that hes real and living in the woods.. he also believes in UFOs and mermaids

lol.. Do they sell canned meat there? or is it just show. I think they show certain foods at our fair too, but I dont think Ive ever seen meat there. theres alot of hunters here, but I thought people always just threw their meat in the freezer.. guess not. Yeah, thats what my gram does too, I dont know how they just guess stuff, its crazy. Wish I could do that. Yeah, I think thats the kind my gram makes, with the red beets & sugar. I dont think she puts any garlic or anything in it, but how would I know, Ive only eaten them once haha.
Yeah its nice being this close to the Amish, the one girl in the family my mom is friends with is about my age & last summer we spent a few hours comparing our cultures. I like to learn the reasoning behind what they do. Some of the things they do I thought were completely out of whack till I learned the reasoning behind them. But they are just as curious about our lifestyles too.
I went up to the Amish bakery for lunch today & talked to the guy who runs the stand. We were talking about my wedding and how the caterers are sooo expensive. He offered to cater my wedding, so excited about that! Considering he makes the BEST chicken & pork :)

There were a few people on the bigfoot episode claiming to have seen bigfoot. Most people around here don't believe, but most of the restaurants have "bigfoot burgers," or whatever..like the restaurant I work at has a bigfoot burger and a bigfoot sundae...all thanks to the show.

You even get the Amish to cater your wedding?!? So unfair!

The baked goods at the fair are all auctioned off, the canned stuff all stays sealed and the people get to take it home after the fair is over. They have canned soups and lard and everything, I can't even imagine what a city person would think if they walked through the exhibit hall.

There's a website called Amish America, I've read quite a lot of interesting articles on there and learned a ton of stuff.
