What are you canning now?

I use spaghetti type sauce on pork roast in the crock pot and it's WONDERFUL. I'm sure it would be just as good on chicken. Be like a chicken parmesan type of result. (can you hear my stomach growl as I think about this?)

I'm going to try this. I'm hoping it will come out like Chicken Cacciatore. Will have to look for recipe and add the extras. Has been really cold and rainy so French Onion soup with a nice piece of crusty french bread is sounding so yummy.

Just got done with more applebutter. Getting ready to can turkey stock from a turkey that we smoked last Sunday. I'm leary about the smokey aroma that it is putting out. It smells good tho. I hope it is still good for something.

Have half of chicken in the crock pot today with tomato basil sauce on it. Will let you know how it turns out.

I am busting open some hot salsa to pour in with some pulled chicken tonight to make tacos with.

I was just going to Walmart to get more jars last night... well forget it... all that had 3 open boxes of wide mouth quart containers left. They were SOLD OUT! Everything was on clearance and it was CLEARED.

So canning is over until I eat what I have and reuse the cans.

I did manage to scoop up the lid seal replacements for when I have cans again.

That does mean I have no more to can to sell though... so I doubt the 'gift' baskets I was planning for Christmas will happen including jellies anymore. Oh well! I hope everyone wants HOT HOT SALSA or Tomato sauce.

Going to WalMart tomorrow - hope mine still has some left. I'm going to also check WinCo who is cheaper than WalMart and see what they might have left. Still have a lot of fruit in the freezer waiting its turn to become something yummy! Would be a dummer if no jars available.

hey, have any of ya'll done a cranberry/apple jam?
Also, I'd like to thank/curse the person who posed the recipe for the caramel apple jam. Testing within the family has it at such a major hit that I have now done two double batches and and am looking to do one more. Thus, the curse...man am I tired of dicing apples! Still, very yummy.
Lastly, quite a while ago someone asked to see my emerald jewel pickles. I will try and post a pic and the recipe this weekend. I must say, I never realized how many folks still canned. I just thought I was weird. I probably am, but at least we eat well at my house.

Do you ask for the jars back?? I am VERY reluctant to give jars of stuff away if I have to buy NEW jars next year. The price for new jars/lids/rings in CA is out of sight!! If the price of the jars/lids is more than I can buy stuff at the grocery store, I have to give serious pause - even if I grow the produce myself. If I have to BUY the produce TOO, it is a very expensive proposition!

What do you do??

Cindy

PS I search for jars on Freecycle, craigslist, etc.

Well, I got a good deal this summer on some used jars. I paid like $6.00 for about 7 dozen. I know what you mean about jars being expensive. I tell people that if they think of it I would like the jar back. But no, most people are so used to just throwing everything away. It's sad really. I won't give out my wide-mouth jars. They cost even more! I think the guy I bought those jars from still has more. He just has to dig them out from other junk!

The auction I was at last week couldn't even sell some pint jars. I have plenty so I didn't bid on them. Sometimes I'll see ads in the paper for them or in thrift shops. It's hard I know. I can go for months searching for them and nothing. Then all of a sudden I'm finding tons of them.
