What are you canning now?

I laughed so hard when I read this. My parents were always doing the same thing. My mom would wrap stuff in foil and stick in the freezer with no label and then she would just pull something out to thaw for supper with no clue what it was. My dad used to get so aggravated with her.

We used to get the "surplus" canned meat. It might be beef or spam. We hated the spam, but it is good fried. My father was in the military so we had his C rations or something like that. Some had peanut butter and jelly others cookies.

Now when the kids would say what's for dinner I'd say "Tuna surprise". They'd say hey this isn't tuna. I'd say SURPRISE!

Or I'd say Puke on toast. They roll their eyes and say Dad!

Gawd... My husband loves both chipped beef on toast (affectionately referred to by its other moniker) and Spam. Yes, he was Navy. They taught him how to eat anything... And clean VERY efficiently. (Probably the best use of U.S. tax dollars was taking all those feral young men and teaching them manners, how to clean, and how to fold laundry)

Yeppers ... my husband was a navy man too. He still folds the socks and underwear and arranges them in the drawers just so. Sometimes his laundry detail is a little too much for me.

Who knew all the hangers had to face the same way??? He's really not OCD about anything else ... just the laundry. Sigh.

I must say, we all eat spam in this house ... fried, of course. Chipped beef on toast ... not so much.

OK. I'm popping in here for a bit. (& a 77 YO male) Not a clean freak. Will do the laundry, but don't fold. Like to cook. The conversation on SOS caught my attention. Going back some 70 years I remember creamed salt cod fish over toast, & was one of my favorites. I've discussed this with some of my friends lately , and all I'm getting is noses up, and frowns. What's your take on creamed cod on toast?

Deprived? Salt cod used to be a staple. Salt water fish,
Very heavy salt pack. In Iowa we didn't ever get fresh ocean fish. Came in a little wood box. The recipes on GOOGLE say to leach the salt from the cod. The cream sauce would be like the white sauce, used in chipped beef. Like creamed dried beef being on the salty side, so was the creamed cod. I've been toying with making a batch using fresh frozen cod, but my GF companion keeps turning up her nose.
