What are you canning now?

Probably. They are already mature, so once they get over the transplant they should reproduce. That is exciting. We can grow fox grapes- a wild concord, and muscadine. I'd love to be able to grow table grapes.
I'd be a fruititarian if I could grow enough to live off of.

Well now I don't know. I was doing a research on "wild grapes" to make jelly and found a posting about false grapes.  Apparently there are some that appear to be grapes but are not. Point? you don't want to poison yourself.

I have vines growing about and some get grapes and some don't.

Please be careful,

Rancher

They were edible grapes on his fence, he had some on his table and took some to the daycare. I just dont know what kind they were.

What are Scuppenongs? Muscadines? You got pics.

I believe the scuppernog are a big meaty white muscadine. I have white bronze purple and this big meaty black one that I eat like a plum.
I had a dog that would eat those off the vine before I knew grapes were bad for dogs.
We would know they were getting ripe when the dog would start checking on them each day.

Rancher, I have wild grapes...used to tear the vines out of the trees in the woods, but noticed the ones growing at the edge of the mowed lawn wre producing grapes. So now I harvest them and make jelly out of them. It may be a little closer to jam...it's not a 4 day event, but neither does it have seeds. Whatever it is, my son's girlfriend says it is her favorite. It has a tart twist to the grapey taste.

Cherry bourbon and cherry vodka. :D

1 C. Cherries
1 C. Alcohol

Wash and remove the stems from the cherries. Use a knife to score the cherries. Put in mason jar. Tighten lid. Give a good shake. Put in cool, dry place for 4 to 6 weeks. Shake every couple of days.

--------------------------------

Got three 1-quart jars of cherries and vodka, a half-gallon jar of cherries and vodka, a 1-quart jar of cherries and Jack Daniels and a 1-quart jar of cherries an Jim Beam.

Processed most all the remaining cucumbers into some very zesty and super good bread & butter pickles. Got 7 quarts and 1 pint. One jar actually broke in the water bath and upon examination, saw it was an old Atlas Mason jar my dad had given me something in years ago, so probably had been used way too often. I searched out the others and labeled them on the side "FRIDGE ONLY" so they wouldn't be used for actual canning anymore. One is humongous, like two quart size. I recall him giving me dried apples in it many years ago (he's 94).

I still have a small batch I am probably going to just feed to the chickens, though you may see that jar of spiced vinegar in the back right that we could use for them if we were of a mind to do so. We canned 53 jars of pickles during the season and the plants have been pulled up though they are still producing. In their place, yellow squash and Contender bush beans. Tomatoes are still not ready to pick for salsa!

I purchased some Scuppernong jelly some time ago while visiting Alabama. Fairhope. It hadn't set well but I saw nothing special about it. I have some watermelon jelly I hope it tastes good.

Too I'm reading Charles Chestnutts book Conjure and it mentions Scuppernongs. Do you know what the word Goofered is ? He uses some terms Southerners might understand.

I have some of these too. I pulling on them to try to get the grape the vines broke so I was out of luck. I hoped to bring the lower and guide them along the fencing, but haven't done so. The mosquitoes will eat you alive.

There is certainly enough wild food out there, one needn't go hungry. Course I've not seen bags of sugar growing on trees.

Well the bags of sugar aren't all that healthy anyhow. I want to learn about the wild food that is healthy...went to some talks through Slow Food, and there are books about foraging. Perhaps if my weeds understand that I will eat them they will be less likely to make themselves at home.
