HAHAHA! I have felt the same way! And I do go out and just sit with them a lot. Im trying not to handle mine a lot just yet cause with so many pasty bums right now, I need to get mine a little less stressed out! LOL Is there a chicken xanex out there?? LMBO j/k But I can't wait to really get to know each one. There is a couple in particular however that seem pretty curious, and will walk into my hand if I rest it in the brooder. One this evening just stared and stared at me. I told my husband she is becoming a fave cause she is so sweet. lol

oh and for pasty butts... put a little olive oil on their rears with a q-tip

Love the chick pictures!! They are so sweet. Some people are getting such exciting breeds, too! I hope everyone updates with pictures, I need them to tide me over until our chicks ship on June 2nd. We had to order out that far because our move in date for our new house isn't until May 16th.

We ordered the following pullers from McMurray:
2 Barred Rock
2 New Hapshire
2 Dark Cornish
2 Buttercup
2 Blue Cochin
2 Light Brahma
2 Silver Grey Dorkings
3 Speckled Sussex
3 Salmon Faverolles

So excited!! We got 25 from McMurray last year in February and didn't have any problems, so I'm really hoping for the same outcome this year. I'm also pregnant (due at the end of July) so losing chicks would be especially emotional. We did have a few weak ones we were given from our feed store that died, it was rough. We did everything we could. I had to cull one. So hard, the poor little things. My daughter (7 years old) still talks about them occasionally. Last year my son was too young to do much with the chicks, but he'll be three in August so he'll be more involved this time.

We did have a pair of buff geese and male and three female Welsh Harliquin ducks ordered, but the house we are buying is across the street from a lake used for drinking water, so you have to keep them out of the lake. I figured we would move in and get things set up first, maybe we can order them next year.

Currently awaiting the arrival of a female Black Sumatra, due to arrive approx around the 22nd of April.

I ordered and paid for 6 Ayam Cemani from wolfwhyte. 2 roosters and 4 hens.
(BTW: last I spoke to him, He was flooded with orders and has stopped taking them...for now.)

They were pricy but still a great deal compared to the Insane prices out there.

I'm going to breed them so more good folks out there can have some too someday.

They will be arriving in late April in the mail.

Picked up our very first little flock yesterday from the farmers' co-op. From bottom left: Silver-laced Wyandotte, Easter Egger, Silver-laced Wyandotte, Australorp, Easter Egger, and Australorp.

My two kids are absolutely smitten. They camped out next to the brooder box last night! It's delightful to see how cautious and gentle they are, and how excited they get when the chicks demonstrate something new. They are fascinating and so fun to watch.

We're watching carefully for pasty butt; two of them had what may have been the beginnings of it yesterday, but we got everything cleaned up all right. Also, the container I have set up for them is definitely too short; one of the Australorps is already adventurous and can nearly hop to the top of the side! So, today we'll need to move them.Hoping that won't stress them out too much.

I have been doing vaseline cause someone said that the olive oil can get rancid? Seems to help only had like two I had to actually wipe last night!!

HOW SWEET!!!!! Front left there looks a lot like one of my babies! Moving them to a larger area will stress them less than being in an area that is too small for them! Or if he got separated from the bunch by jumping out he will really be upset! lol I actually fed mine scrambled eggs for the pasty bums and out of 21 I have only 3 that didnt have it. After the eggs yesterday, last night, I only had to wash like 2!! So, if it seems like its getting worse, I really suggest that! I have to go through and do our morning clean up here in a bit! Can't wait to spend time with them all!

So excited this year!

I'm expecting 2 shipments from Meyer Hatchery. All female.

One the week of March 25th
of 15 total with 4 Buff Orphington, 2 White Rock, 3 White Leghorn, 2 Easter Egger, 2 Silver Lace Wyandotte, 2 Blue Ameracauna

And the second the week of May 3rd
9 total. 2 Salmon Favorelle, 2 Golden Lace Wyandotte, 3 Black Copper Marans

And of course the Meyer Meal Maker with each shipment. Loved my Barred Rock I got last year. She was an excellent layer and good temperament. Unfortunately she died from a stray dog attack. My extra eggs this year will be going to a battered women's shelter.

AND... I just got 6 Silkie chicks from a friend, former neighbor of mine who raises them.

Well, we lost 2 chicks last night. One we had separated from the others and gave extra attention trying to get her healthy but she didn't make it though the night. Other one was a complete surprise this morning. So, far the rest of the chicks look really good, just running around and eating. Hopefully, we don't lose any more.
