sorry I rambled on ..

I dropped by the local tractor supply today to grab a new thermometer for my incubator, low and behold they had some new chicks in. However when I started asking what breed they were the man shrugged his shoulders and muttered under his breath that they were mutts. $2 each for mixed breed babies. I never thunk it not even for the life of me that I would see mix breeds in tractor supply. So when I started asking more and more questions. He was embarrassed you could tell. But he said there was no guarantees on the chicks as to what was in them, all that he knew was that all were white.

I walked out laughing all the way.

These did not come from their normal supplier when I asked where they came from the man got all red in the face and pointed down the road and said a few miles that way.

Exactly what happened to me at TSC...I called them to ask them what kind of chicks they had and all the could tell me was some lay brown eggs and some don't but they were 90% guarenteed to pullet and they were a mix of breeds.

I don't thinks so....this is why I'm driving to a local breeder who knows her own birds and also sexs so I won't get (for the most part) and cockerels.

The worst part is that if we don't know what breed they are then how do we know they are not just from the local chicken farm that raises meat birds. I don't want those white chickens they breed just for the slaughter houses.

Gosh I can go to the farm myself and get them for 10 cents each if I pick up what got loose outside. I did that a few years ago and got about 100 of them, however you have to slaughter them they wont lay eggs. Most are cockerels as well.

But now we don't know if they are healthy, what types they are or anything. To me it's just stupidity to see TSC doing that. I could have hatched them out some pure bred Delaware had I of known they are taking babies from just anyone now.

What is wrong with a mixed breed? Are they sickly? Or is it just like Puppy mills or something?

I have mix breeds for eating eggs and meat only. However if I want a certain breed I want that and not a mix of that with lord only knows what. And yes some folks do raise them like puppy mills do with dogs. Me and another lady close to me, are getting into only certain breeds, and then we will be selling babies next year through craigslist, and selling eggs online.
