WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? WHAT DID YOU JUST RECEIVE?

I was thinking about going to my local feed store and picking up a baby chick to replace the one that was murdered. Might cheer me up. But I hear that feed stores like to sell roosters as pullets. What do you all think?
My feed store, which is where I bought my 4 BA girls sell both sexed and free run.

Sorry you lost all your chicks due to USPS negligence. It doesn't happen THAT often, but often enough to add to the USPS's deplorable rep. The hatchery will replace the lost chicks, but before you drive 2400 miles round trip, you might want to check w/local breeders and see if they have any chicks or young birds they would sell you. They will cost more per bird, but it may work out less costly than that drive. Either way, I hope your quest for chickens becomes satisfied.
Thanks late starter, I did get online and check with Iowa Hatcheries and I have never found anything really in Nebraksa. My problem is I had Black Copper Marans, Cream Legbar, Lavender Orpington, Olive egger, Blue Ameraucana, Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, I cant find all of those anywhere and most I cant get at all. The US postal consumer affairs office in both Omaha and Denver have said that they will take control of the chicks, next week and the week after. After they get to there. Found out that FedEx flies them for the post office, so I am working with them to see if one destination is better than the other. Omaha is 7 hours for me, Denver 4. I know the screw up happened after the post office got hold of them again. The consumer affairs lady in Omaha is all over this. She considers it animal cruelty, and why did some on the dock not call me and say its to hot, I cant put them in the back of the truck. I am thankful for the people that I have had on the other end of the phone all day. They have really helped.

This is Ghost...... I don't know what breed she is. Any thoughts? Delaware?

This is Fysty ........ Favaucana

Tyrian .................. Favaucana

Solo ............... My surviving Jersey Giant

They are all very happy, healthy and doing great since the accident. I have decided to put them in the Garden to live free range. I have to make a few modifications to keep them safe but I think they will love it, and they deserve it after their traumatic start in life. These little chicks are so friendly! Maybe it's the breeds, or maybe they are just glad to be here

6 more days til they arrive! I think I'm ready for them.
Decided to use my Great Dane's crate so that I'd have access from the front rather than coming in from overhead like a scary monster (plus it's huge). We shall see how it goes. The only other thing I may change is the light, gotta get my temperature right :)

Looks good, that actually is a really good idea. My friend uses the same technique and it works out fairly well. One thing he has done though is that he cut a small hole on top of the crate in order to have light from above. That's the only disadvantage, the ability to move the light up and down to adjust heat as well as placement. You may have to watch heat fluctuations.

I agree on the placement of your light...you should try to hang it from above the crate so you can either pull it up or down to get your temps right. Do you have a thermometer...I didn't see one. Best of luck...that's a great crate for little fuzzy-butts!!!

Going to get a thermometer tomorrow. I really would rather not cut a hole in the crate if I can help it, but I guess I won't really know until I have the thermometer in there. Thanks for the input!

Yeah, I know you don't want to put a hole in that dog crate...but! By having your heat lamp at an angle like that it will light up the entire crate not leaving any "darker/cooler" areas for them to go to if they get a little overheated. It would be sort of like being in an interrogation room with a searchlight blasting on you....yikes!!
