*hey, bigzio-- No, see, I HAVE an A.V., maybe 1O-15 MINUTES away!! But, "chicken-FRIENDLY" vet is another story! :[ When Miss Chook got hit by that possum, I spoke to 3 vets. #1 was the 24-hr "ALL PETS" ER vet's--7 blks. Away. They said, " We wouldn't BEGIN TO KNOW how to treat a chicken. You need an EXOTIC ANIMAL vet." & they gave me a number. I asked, "Since when is a chicken an exotic animal??" They said, " Sorry, Call Dr. So & So". Call #2: The exotic vet says, same as me, "Why did they refer you to me? SINCE WHEN IS A CHICKEN AN EXOTIC PET??" He asked what happened; I told him. He said, " I can't treat that. You need an AVIAN vet. There's one real close to you just over the cty line." Told him warily that I actually knew of that AV, but that I understood their practice to be pretty much exclusive to parrots. He was sure they could take on a chicken, because afterall--"WHAT DO THEY TRAIN ON??" CALL #3: AV's Office-- Con't: post 2.

Vet Call #3 (con't): Keep in mind that Chook is a mess and I am pretty frantic & frustrated at not being able to find help for her, right? WELL, AFTER I lay out our entire traumatic evening for this guy, he says to me, " I DOUBT YOU HAVE A FERAL CHICKEN, I DOUBT THE CHICKEN IS A HEN, I DOUBT IT WAS ATTACKED AS YOU SAY BY A POSSUM!" and goes on to indicate his belief that I "likely" had myself a rooster which had been injured in certain nefarious & illegal activities which shall remain unnamed by me! BUT!! said "he'd be willing to treat the rooster" for $1OO O.V plus $35 Emer. Fee plus whatever treatment he deemd necessary. Probly would have taken her, too!-- but by now, I was pretty much scared to take her to ANY vet ANYWHERE & went on to do the best I could alone for the next 2 months til she was well. No doubt she would have gotten better faster & maybe been even better with a pro's help, but . . . . .

*AND you have a REAL chicken vet who even lets you order stuff?? I'm too jealous for words right at this moment! O.k. better. . . I HAVE NOT been able to find a single "chicken-friendly" vet so far in my area. No surprise when the area isn't friendly to chickens I guess tho.

No I really don't have a chicken vet. I tried that once here and my vet laughed...... He's lucky he still has me as a customer but large animal vets are slim pickins here.

The chicken doctor is a website that you can buy meds and things for your flock. Some of the meds are off label, thus the med dosage chart. I got the link here at BYC, I'll try to find it and post it for you.​

*hey! allenacres. What's the difference betwn red-cote & blue-cote-- and I know cod liver oil has A & D, but don't they get enuf in feed? How are you using it?

Yep, that's really sad that you should have to experience treatment like that from any veterinarian regardless of their specialty. Poultry fanciers are very passoniate folks....to bad the avian folks aren't aware of all the possible buisness they are turning away. It just isn't funny when the problem you have involves chickens, and they look at you with that smirk on their face, like chickens don't matter.

I've heard more than once that the office call, or the fecal test is more than the bird is worth!

What is one suppose to do?
How is one suppose to feel?

I don't blame you, at one time I didn't know where to get anything besides powdered terramycin for my flock.

Okay, here's the link to the "chicken doc" Its actually first state vet supply. I use them quite often and i've never had bad service. As a matter of fact the last time I ordered I got a few "freebies" in my box (syringes, alcohol preps).

Others may use someone else, this is just who I found while surfing BYC and someone had mentioned them and I like them so it works out well for me.

I scanned the med dosage chart that was sent when I ordered from first state vet. I don't know that everything listed is effective or even safe to use on your chickens. This is just what I was given and what I refer to. Please don't mistake my posting as advocating to use the drugs listed in the ways described. I'm merely passing on information that may or may not be useful to someone here.

I found it useful as a general guideline but please note that there are no withdrawl times on some of the drugs listed and I don't know what they are. I guess you just need to use your own judgement on what you are comfortable with.​
