What are YOUR laws?

METRO NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE / DAVIDSON COUNTY - -

See link here -- https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=1532040#p1532040

Poultry
are allowed.

[Ed. to add - - since this very old post has been dug up, please note that Metro Nashville's laws have been updated. Nashvillians, please check your local laws carefully if you are researching this, as there are some new regs to contend with.]

I live 5 houses out of the city limits, therefore i am legal. If I have them for a year without complaints, i am legal. My neighbors don't even know my chickens exist, I like it that way.

Hi there,

Our township is proudly a rural community in a sea of over development. For the last twenty or so years, my township has fought off this insurgence of people/laws/and susequent litter and every household here has a "right to farm". We have only a half acre but we can still keep chickens, for a horse I think we would need at least an acre.

We also have very tolerant and nice neighbors, which helps a lot.

Penny (deep in the heart of the "Do Not" state, New Jersey)

In the city of Appleton, WI the ordinance states:

No person shall keep, sell or offer for sale any horses,
cows, pigs, goats, sheep, bees, chickens, geese, ducks or
other fowl or any other domestic animal other than a dog,
cat or rabbit, and construct or use shelters therefore, within
the City without the written permit of the Board of Health.
Application for a permit for authorized animals shall be
made to the Department of Health.

So you just need a permit from the Health Board? Not sure how difficult that would be.

This is Neenah, WI (5 mi away):

Keeping of fowls.
(a) No person shall keep or harbor any chickens, doves or other fowl or build, erect or maintain and use any chicken coop or yard, dove cote or other building or yard to keep or house any chickens, doves or other fowl anywhere within the City without registering the name and address of the owner and the approximate number of chickens, doves or other fowl to be kept by such owner at the office of the Health Officer.
(b) All chicken coops and yards, dove cotes and other buildings or yards wherein any domestic animals are contained shall be kept in a clean, sanitary condition and free from all objectionable odors and shall be subject to the inspection and approval of the Health Officer. Approval shall be given upon a showing that such facilities are clean, in sanitary condition and free from all objectionable odors.

Wrightstown (between Appleton and Green Bay) seems to allow chickens but not to run "at large."

Brillion doesn't have anything specifically prohibiting chickens, but states this under Cruelty:

No person except a police officer or health or humane officer
in the pursuit of his duties shall, within the city, shoot or kill or commit an act of cruelty
to any animal or bird or disturb any bird's nests or bird's eggs.

Does that mean you can't collect your hen's eggs??

Most of the city regs I looked at don't allow chickens, unfortunately.

Guess it's time to start petitioning!

Phoenix.

20 hens. no roos.

Must be in a coop... cannot 'free range'.

Any home within 80 ft of coop must give written permission for you to have chickens.

I live out of the city in the county, but we are zoned as a subdivision. I am fairly sure livestock are not allowed but nobody is going to complain as everybody has them around here.
