I am not so sure that it is illegal to grow poppies in the US. As far as I am aware there was a law called the Poppy Control Act that absolutely made it illegal in the US to grow or even possess the seeds. However, that law was repealed more then 30 years ago and now the law regarding the growing of poppies is pretty confusing to say the least. I have grown poppies every year for more then twenty years as an ornimental flower in my gardens in Upstate NY and do not expect to ever have a problem. Also, growers in Californis grow poppies in hugh numbers for the seeds. I would suspect that unless you have acres of poppies and you are cutting the seed pod to extract the bad stuff you would not have any problems growing poppies in your garden.
in some places it i still perfectly legal to grow salvia and jimson weed, both can be made into hallucinogenic drugs, and both deadly

Really? I must have been misinformed. Glad I didn't decide to grow any.
To clarify I had no desire to grow poppies for opium. They're beautiful and have delicious healthy seeds.
