What are your state's "hot issues?"

Indian Apple

I am not so sure that it is illegal to grow poppies in the US. As far as I am aware there was a law called the Poppy Control Act that absolutely made it illegal in the US to grow or even possess the seeds. However, that law was repealed more then 30 years ago and now the law regarding the growing of poppies is pretty confusing to say the least. I have grown poppies every year for more then twenty years as an ornimental flower in my gardens in Upstate NY and do not expect to ever have a problem. Also, growers in Californis grow poppies in hugh numbers for the seeds. I would suspect that unless you have acres of poppies and you are cutting the seed pod to extract the bad stuff you would not have any problems growing poppies in your garden.

The poppies grown here are California Poppies, not Opium poppies. While all poppies contain opiates in the seeds, opium poppies are much stronger and you cannot legally buy them in seed catalogs.

Here's an interesting article on the legality of Opium Poppies: http://suite101.com/article/legal-risk-of-growing-opium-poppies-a147603

Really? I must have been misinformed. Glad I didn't decide to grow any.
To clarify I had no desire to grow poppies for opium. They're beautiful and have delicious healthy seeds.

There are 2 forms of poppies. If you talk with those who have been around the hemp debate they tell you there are 2 forms of hemp both look identical to each other but one contains less of the compound to make a person high (apparently you'd have to burn a large Field of it to get the high from one small joint), but because people can't tell the species apart the government refuses to too allow the non-abused version to grow for manufacturing purposes. they same is true for poppies unless you know exactly what is what and get some "heritage" variety here in the US you won't get the ones that can make you high, the ones sold in stores and garden centers have been bred so the effect of smoking them for a high is a joke, ad with the hemp you'd have to burn a whole field pray for just the right breeze and them get a short high out of it.
