Yep, we never would have thought of it either, but a friend and fellow BYC member has made a couple of them. The compressor was shot in the one we bought (as Sportsterjeep, my hubby said) and it was a steal at $25. There was nothing else wrong with it and since we need to heat and not cool, we scrapped the compressor, moved the fan a little bit, drilled some holes, added 2 sets of outlets, 2 heating elements, and a hot water heater thermostat.
Our cooler came with 4 shelves, but we could probably fir 2 more in there. We only have 2 turners right now, but they fit perfectly on the shelves. We put water for humidity on the bottom of the cooler. The fan pulls air up from the bottom and pushes it out and down. The glass door is so nice to be able to see what is going on and not be tempted to open it during hatching.
We have less than $100 in the bator itself, not counting the turners.
