I thought with raw you feed whole pray as in organs too?? My picky dog will eat raw rabbit, liver is her fav.

I feed Nutro. It was recommended to me when I got my dog as a puppy. It was one of the few brands that had large breed puppy food, and it does make him shiny! There was a shortage once and I couldn't get it, so I fed taste of the wild for a month and if I ever have to switch, that's what I will go with.

I feed Canidae.

I did alot of research on dog food and how terrible it is. Canidae is not what I want to feed my dog, because I was rather have her on a full diet of regular food ( meats vegatables) but I barely have time to feed myself, then give my dog gourmet meals!

So the best dog food but extremely expensive is Innova, I went down to the Canidae which is supposed to be second best because it is a little cheaper.

I only have Rat Terrier to feed and am looking into getting a Blue Heeler, so this is what my dogs will be on. If I was a little richer lol it would be the Innova, millionaire they wouldn't eat dog food at all

We tried our older GSD Jax on raw and he had bowel problems if I didn't mix the various ingredients precisely or if one meat had a little more fat content than another, etc.
When we added the younger GSD Kane to the household, we started feeding TSC's 4health puppy food, but it worries me because it's not formulated specifically for large breed puppies. We make one trip a month to the TSC in Oklahoma to buy dog food and on the next trip I plan to switch them to the Diamond Brand Naturals for large breed puppies. In comparison it's pretty much the same as the 4health and actually comes out less expensive than the 4health.
I don't want to get into the hassle of feeding two different foods, especially since Kane is a food thief, so I plan on keeping both boys on the large breed puppy food until Kane is at least 18 months old; at which time Jax will be 27 months or a little over 2 years old. I think this is a good plan since Jax has a problem keeping weight on.
We supplement daily with chicken quarters or lean hamburger, homemade liver treats and/or sweet potato-duck chews.

you do...in whole prey you have chicken, duck, lamb, whatever,,once dead throw to dog..if small dogs you will need to cut the prey up and feed in portions until gone,,bones, feathers, hides, guts and all..if you feed grocery store raw meat, just add in organs every now and then to simulate whole prey,,

I have a question for you Lorie, sorta OT a bit.
When I feed the boys chicken leg quarters or any larger pieces of meat, DH says I should cut Kane's pieces up for him. He's three and a half months old and doesn't seem to have any problem chowing down on the whole quarter. Is cutting it up really necessary for a GSD pup?
TIA

what "various ingredients are you talking about? in true raw feeding all you feed is raw meat, bones, and organs..if you cannot get grass fed meat some will give salmon oil for omega 3's,soy free oil..I give raw eggs also because I have so many eggs around..you start with one protien like bone-in chicken breast, feed that for 2 weeks to maybe 2 months for some dogs, then add in another protien, small portions, added to the chicken, keeping in mind the 2-3% idea adult body weight portions..to many meats to fast will make some dogs loose,as will pork and lamb until they get used to it as they are fatty meats,,ever butchered a sheep?,very fatty..the one I did last week ad 2-3lb globs of fat along her spine, and not like chicken fat, this is hard and crumbly.Dont even worry about organs until you are several months into this diet,,then start with thumbnail size pieces.to much organ will give them the runs also

Jax would get the runs easily, also gas. I think it was too much meat, too fast. The only meats available around here are from walmart. We are supposed to be getting an actual butcher shop in town, so I hope to be able to purchase better for him.
Both Kane and Jax seemed to have very sensitive tummies as young pups. Jax outgrew his and Kane is doing better.
