you do...in whole prey you have chicken, duck, lamb, whatever,,once dead throw to dog..if small dogs you will need to cut the prey up and feed in portions until gone,,bones, feathers, hides, guts and all..if you feed grocery store raw meat, just add in organs every now and then to simulate whole prey,,

I have a question for you Lorie, sorta OT a bit.
When I feed the boys chicken leg quarters or any larger pieces of meat, DH says I should cut Kane's pieces up for him. He's three and a half months old and doesn't seem to have any problem chowing down on the whole quarter. Is cutting it up really necessary for a GSD pup?
TIA

no it is not if he is eating quarters,my girls at that age where getting a whole chicken, plucked, thats it..I gave my 9 week old 2 lb morkie 1 week old chicks all week and she ate them up and was crazy looking for more..now some older dogs that arent used to having to actually work to eat will act like they cannot eat bones, because they dont know they can.

Canidae All Life Stages

4 sources of human grade protein. No beet pulp so REALLY helps with eye stains on my cotons.

what "various ingredients are you talking about? in true raw feeding all you feed is raw meat, bones, and organs..if you cannot get grass fed meat some will give salmon oil for omega 3's,soy free oil..I give raw eggs also because I have so many eggs around..you start with one protien like bone-in chicken breast, feed that for 2 weeks to maybe 2 months for some dogs, then add in another protien, small portions, added to the chicken, keeping in mind the 2-3% idea adult body weight portions..to many meats to fast will make some dogs loose,as will pork and lamb until they get used to it as they are fatty meats,,ever butchered a sheep?,very fatty..the one I did last week ad 2-3lb globs of fat along her spine, and not like chicken fat, this is hard and crumbly.Dont even worry about organs until you are several months into this diet,,then start with thumbnail size pieces.to much organ will give them the runs also

Jax would get the runs easily, also gas. I think it was too much meat, too fast. The only meats available around here are from walmart. We are supposed to be getting an actual butcher shop in town, so I hope to be able to purchase better for him.
Both Kane and Jax seemed to have very sensitive tummies as young pups. Jax outgrew his and Kane is doing better.

yes,the walmart meats are a problem as most are inhanced with sodium and flavors and that can cause lots of problems in dogs.I am lucky to have several farms and a great meat shop near me,,and of course tons of home grown poultry..the first day of OB class with our girls was also the first day they had whole prey hog...it was a pretty stinky ride to class and back,.

We feed our Pug Puppy California Natural. We actually spoke to our petshop owner and he had us check out http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/ it's a non Biased site that rates dog foods. For a long time we fed our dogs grocery store cheap foods, but after checking out this site we switched to California Natural because is doesn't really have fillers which are hard to digest, and the main ingredients were real meat, not Meat bi-products. We were also told that grocery store dog foods were like dog candy, and that was also what gave dogs bad breath.

I used to feed my lab Eukanuba of some type.

She's been raw fed for the last three years. (deer, small game, fish, pork and chicken) She chews up and eats so many bones she has jowls like a pitbull.

Purina Pro Plan or O.N.E...

Our dogs are less gassy
less poopy
and generally digestively happy with it!

Taste of the wild or one of the other diamond feeds that don't have corn (TOTW is actually made by diamond). Right now we have the lamb formula. Kibble is less than half their diet though. They get a satin ball and beef rib bone every night as healthy treats and supplements. Then whole rabbit, quail, or chicken and occasionally larger beef or venison bones when we get them. Satin balls can be used as a whole diet and the formula was approved by a vet if you can't get enough raw meat and bones in your area. They are designed to be fattening though so should only be fed to dogs that don't put on weight too easily. The original recipe calls for high fat hamburger but we've used other leaner ground meats. Currently mine are eating venison satin balls instead of hamburger.

I feed our dogs only one brand and one brand only from now on and that is Canidae brand. I tried SO many other brands and none of them kept weight on my boxer at all. He was skin and bones. Was told by a vet to try soft foods with his dry food. Still didn't work. Then he said he feeds his active dogs Canidae but it's very expensive. I didn't care of the price as long as I could not see ribs on my boxer anymore so people didn't think I starved him! It took about a month of feeding him that and he looks GREAT now. I don't even have to supplement soft food either. He's even more active now which makes me happy we have 20 acres for him to run on LOL He uses it too!
