What brand of feed do you give your chickens?

I have my 23 week old hens on Purina Layeena. It's entirely vegetarian, though not organic. I like the idea there is no dead chicken parts in the feed.

When I first received the chicks, I put them onto medicated feed, then Purina's Start and Grow.
You may want to go to the Purina site and type in your zipcode.

This will give you a list of feed stores that may or may not carry Purina products. I order mine from DaMoor's Feed and Tack in Glendale. I have to order it, but it only takes a few days to come in. There may be something closer to you.

According to the labels of the brands I use with animal protein, there are no ruminants and only porcine products as the animal part. Just because it has animal protein doesn't mean it's just anything goes.

I got lucky and found a place that I can get organic feed for less than $20/50 lb bag plus shipping. The shipping isn't bad within the state, but since you're so far away, it might be a small fortune... Took a lot of hunting to find it. Keep searching locally, you might find something. Call the state extension office. I didn't want any GMO corn in my feed so going organic was really important to me. Here's the mill where I get mine.

I feed my birds Nutrena Layer crumbles to my big girls and Nutrena Starter/Grower crumbles to my babies. $12. per 50 lb bag. I also give my birds treats of scratch, (oats, unhulled sunflower seeds, once in awhile bird seed, cracked corn etc.), in small quanities as these are treats. I also give them vegies, fruits, most everything that I can grow including all kinds of greens. I do grow a lot of corn and watermelon especially, also tomatoes, squash, root crops, the list can go on. I feed them everything except potatoes. I figure they will eat what they want. I do free range them.

I used Agway grower mash and hated it because it was so messy, I'm now using Blue Seal layer pellets which are working out really well. I think at 50 lb. bag was $12.

My feed store (Gilmore's in Walpole MA) bags their own cracked corn, BOSS, oyster shell and grit and they have good prices. The BOSS needs to be picked over a bit before I give it to the girls, but it smells fresh and clean as does the cracked corn.
