What brand/type of poultry feed do you use?

I use dumors from tsc.I too like the animal protein in it.My birds do not like the purnia.I use canned cat food cheap kind fish flavored 1 can per wk. they love that like nothing else. They also love the tsc scratch grain.I also make up a 5galloon bucket of cornmeal, garlic powder, rolled quick oats flax seed some wheat croutons, wheat germ and add a 1/2c of that sprinkled over their food every other day or so that is a big hit as well

Are you saying you use Dumor Layer & it has animal proteinin it? I have used it & look at the bags everytime someone says there is animal protein in Dumor & I have never seen it listed on the bags here in PA. Just wondering.

Wow, all these responses and I see nobody talking about producers pride. I get my crumbled at MFA here in Missouri and have found TSC and our other feed store to be too expensive. Mine is a 26% feed and I prefer the crumbled till they start laying. Then I go to the pellets and oyster shells.

I have used Hubbard, but I was getting comments about my birds looking 'dry' from my mentors at the shows. Adding a little BOSS didn't work for the Cornish, they stopped laying, seriously no eggs at all. So I switched.

I have used Kent Multi-flock, but ran into an issue with some of my MGB Hens.

So now I am using Purina Flock Raiser. It has solved all the problems so far. Cornish seem to do really well on it they seem to keep good lean weight and look very glossy, and the MGB hens have straightened out. I am noticing that they are slower coming out of the molt, but I hadn't been giving kitten chow because I felt 20% was sufficient. Based on Chris' comment I will add some Mackrel and/or kitten chow and see how it goes.

I really wish I could go back to a pellet. The Cornish will not eat the fine crumbles or powder, but the Doms will so there's not a lot of waste there. I have had to change to a trough type feeder for some pens because they were wasting it from the hanging feeder. I noticed a lot more sparrows in the barn since the switch. I am putting up netting to hopefully keep them out this weekend.

I am seriously thinking of switching to the Kent 27% pellet and mixing in my own components to get to 18-20% protein feed, but havent had the time to price it out. Anybody have a good Breeder Diet based on the Kent 27%? I'd really like to see if it is doable price wise.

Coyote Creek organic layer crumbles made in Elgin TX. I like that it is mostly made with products grown in Texas and not having to travel as far.

Why do you not like Purina? I'm a chicken owning newbie, and that's what I use, so is there something wrong with it?

Purina Chicken Feed is soybean based and has no animal protein in it.
Soy isn't the best thing for your chickens to eat. A lot of breeders myself included have found if you feed a feed that is soy based with no animal proteins in it you will tend to have poor hatch rate and fertility problems in your roosters.

Chickens need some animal protein in there feed also animal proteins is easier for poultry to digest than a plant protein.

Chris

Thanks for the tip!

i use layer ration crumbles... i go to the smallest local feed store, and buy it there:) we used to use purina layer ration crumbles, but they seem to like this much better.
plus, the purina was $13/bag at TSC and this feed store stuff is $8.
