My guess = chick with red comb is a roo!

Im not sure if tail feathers mean anything but 2 chicks have fluffy and wide tail feathers where 1 has narrow tail feathers

I am also thinking they maybe light Sussex too.

The little one with the bigger comb is a cockeral and I'm thinking light sussex

The other two look like pullets.

Can you post better photos of them please? What color are their legs?

Don is a Light Sussex cockerel, the other two appear to be either leghorn pullets or white rock pullets. I can't tell until they're older and either the leghorns stay light, or the rocks put on some muscle.
I agree. :)

If Don's legs are pink, which they indeed appear to be, that makes him a Light Sussex.

The other two definitely aren't light sussex.

My worry is they look like maybe they could be Cornish cross. But I haven't yet raised CC myself.

Anyone agree with them looking like that?

They seem too hefty to me to be either Leghorns or even really Rocks.

If they were Cornish cross, they would be half naked at this age. At about 3 weeks, the bird is growing faster than the feathers can grow and come in, so they look kind of naked. Eventually the feathers catch up, but the chicken would be as wide as it is long.....

I gotcha.

Thank you for that. :) We hope to try our first ones this fall or next spring. Although idk how we will like them and we plan to pasture them.

I figured other than being extra meaty they would look somewhat normal for another week or so.

We have our first red rangers right now. Otherwise we have always bred and raised our own heritage cockerals.

You might find our project interesting: Our Broiler Project

We are raising 4 Cornish Rock and 8 Red Ranger in free range conditions (right now they are in the safety of the enclosed garden while their adoptive mamas teach them to forage). I plan to report on how the birds grow as well as how they compare to each other. I know its a small sample size, but its a start!

We have processed excess layer breed cockerels, and in our opinion it is just not worth the time and effort, so we usually sell/give away those guys.
