From looking at pictures online, I would guess these are RIR?? We got them from TSC a couple weeks ago. How do I know if its a roo or a hen?
One of them is a little more red and the other is a little more yellow.

When we got them they were about 2 weeks old I am guessing?...

Any help would be great! We can't have roosters in the city so I am hoping they are hens, or they will have to find a new home.

Like I said...look like pullets.

Pullets are female chickens under 1 year of age.
Hens are female chickens 1 year of age or older.
Cockerels are male chickens under 1 year of age.
Cocks are male chickens 1 year of age or older.

Production Reds and Red Sex-Links aren't the same, are they? I was thinking maybe these girls might be Red Sex-Links. But then, I am no breed/gender expert. I just put in my guesses based on a few things I have learned.

They look like production reds, one pullet, one cockerel. The yellow headed one has lack of bow feathers normally signaling cockerel. Look on the back the cockerel should be developing back feathers before the pullet.

Quote:
Production reds are not the same thing as red sex-links. Production reds are basically hatchery quality RIRs and red sexlinks are a mix of two different breeds bred specifically so they can be sexed by color at 1 day old.

I think you have to wait a few more weeks before you can tell for sure what sex they are.

This is our production red pullet when she was about 2 - 2 1/2 weeks of age.
