What breed AND gender is this??

He's not a partridge Rock, too much black. I'm thinking he's a mixed breed cockerel. If he's this old and still nice and respectful of you, he might be a keeper.

I was just looking at a rare chicken sale page. There was a chicken there who looks almost exactly like yours, it's a chocolate Orpington. If you got it from a hatchery, then they made a mistake in your favor. :) Cant wait to see what she/he produces.

he is not chocolate, he would be chocolatey brown. Their rooster is black/red, hatcheries don't have chocolate anything (at least not yet)

This looks a lot like my guy in question…. It all depends on how the light shines on him as to the colors he shows. Tonight he looked like he has a rainbow on his back :)
Since he is 20 weeks old and still not crowing, showing no interest in the girls or aggression towards me….I dont think his hormones have hit him yet. Fingers crossed that he stays nice

Now that is interesting. I see what you mean. It probably was the camera or just a bad pic. But the picture he was showing was definitely a black chicken. Sorry to confuse anyone.

I'm going with Partridge Rock cockerel. The dominance of the other rooster may have actually suppressed his testosterone levels. He'll be 'manning' up soon and you will have a more accurate assessment of his temperament. Hopefully he will remain mellow.

Well.... My boy started crowing earlier this week. He has tried to hop on the girls a time or two, but when they cry out he ducks his head and runs in fear! LOL! He still has not shown any aggression and I have been trying to go in the coop everyday and I bring treats with me.....maybe if he sees me as "THE ONE WHO BRINGS GOODIES", he will be nicer to me :)
