They didn't starve, they were eaten by the local predators long before that. If they did manage to avoid the predators, I'm sure they would have died from disease before starving.

Oh, on the OP's topic. They look to be crossbred cockerels to me. Nearing the time to dress them out.

At this point, I would almost agree that the birds body shape and feathers look like pullets. However, the OP said the birds were 8-9 weeks old. Look at the waddles on those birds. At that age to have waddles like that on a Rock, no way they're hens.

OP keep us posted with pics as they grow. How sure are you on the age of the birds?
