Today I got a Roo from where I work (a farm). He was abandoned and was hanging around the farm for about 3 or 4 days. No food, barely any water. He has a limp too. I fed him today and called my boss to ask about him. He wasn't the farms so I took him home. He crows and has spurs so he is definately a Roo.
I just need to know what breed he is if i decide to get him some hens of his own. An age aproximation would be awsome too but I understand that is really difficult.

That his him outside our duck pen at work before i took him home.

I went outside and got better pictures. Its night so i had to use the flash.

Then comes the question, what is a production red?

Hatchery RIR. Usually somewher in the bloodline a RIR and NHR were bred together. Thus a produced "Hybrid". Very good layers. A pure bred RIR will be very dark red, almost brown. I have two pruduction RIR pullets.

Ah, ok. Thats good to know.
So if i want to get him some hens that will give cute chicks like him (hehe) should i look for RIR or NHR?

I would just stick with the Production RIR from hatcheries. But you could mate him with any chicken and see what colors you get. I have a Splash Orpington cockerel and 2 each of Buff Orpingtons, Production RIR's and Barred Rocks. Gonna be getting 6-8 more pairs of pullets in late winter. Then I will be raising birds from my own eggs. Not interested in show quality now. Just want eggs and birds in the yard to watch run around.

Ok.
I have a local livestock show i go to every year with a few of my hens, it is kind of my focus but the major goal is lots of eggs.
