Here she is. She's sweet and doesnt seem flighty... her legs are clean. 3 weeks old exactly.

Anyone know what breed she is?

I can't find fancy breeds around here and afraid to mail order.

Don't be! I have mail ordered two separate batches of chicks from the hatchery (Meyer is the one I use) and I haven't lost a single chick yet. They even threw in free chicks. I've been really, really impressed with how well they ship, at least with Meyer anyway. I have heard some horror stories about other hatcheries though, and I think it mostly depends on your shipping route.

Barring that, you can always invest in a small incubator (Brinsea has a really well-rated one on Amazon that holds seven eggs for $141 - that's the one I bought) and hatch out whatever breed or mix of breeds you like! :D

I will have to look into them, do they have a minimum you have to purchase? I would like to hatch some time in the future, but have read horror stories about that and have a five year old that has hard time with the chicks we have lost already.

Meyer Hatchery has a three chick minimum during the spring/summer months (I believe it increases to six chicks during the fall/winter for added protection against the cold).

They also have a program called the Meyer Meal Maker program where they will throw in an additional chick with your order for free if you will pledge (casually) to donate some of your meat or eggs to someone who doesn't keep chickens and/or needs the food, and kind of extoll the virtues of chickenkeeping on the general public. I got a really nice White Rock with my silkie flock that way last year, and am expecting another "mystery chick" with my Orpington order at the end of May. They give you a "production" type chick of the same category of chickens you're already buying, so if you're buying female layers, they're supposed to give you another female layer, if you're buying meat birds, they throw in an extra meat bird, etc...

Oh kool, I'm going on their site right now. I called Rule King to replace 2 I lost (not their chicks) and they have a 6 chick minimum! Thanks for all the info.
