I went to pick up my Black Copper Maran from Santa yesterday and the local chicken store said they had a chicken who is SUPPOSED to be a splash maran, BUT no leg feathers at all. They gave her to me “cheep” because that cant tell me what kinda chicken she is.

Anyone have any ideas of what kinda chicken Ethel is? She is very big and tall. The black copper maran next to her is apparently the same age.

The British imported French Black Copper Marans and bred them to have featherless legs, so her not having feathered legs doesn't necessarily mean she isn't a Marans.

You might have to wait to see what color of egg she lays, unfortunately, to know. The Splash Marans won't lay as dark of egg as a FBCM, generally, but it should still be fairly dark.

Do you know what hatchery your local chicken store uses? That might be helpful in determining what she might be.

I didnt think to ask about the hatchery until i made it home and they were closed. Ill call and ask today. I know they very recently switched hatcheries.

They should lay any week now. They are laying age youngsters 18 weeks. Ill keep an eye on her eggs and report back if her breed hasnt been discovered yet.

Adding on to what @Jener8or has said. You want to look for slate grey legs with pink feet in Marans.
It appears she does in my view so that's a plus towards she is a Marans.

Have you taken a real close look at her legs? They may just be barely noticable and she's picking at them making it appear she has none.

(Like looking for stubble)

Depending on the hatchery they usually attempt for feathered legs because the APA (American Poultry Association) follows the French SOP (Standard of Perfection) that requires feathered shanks and that's what most people want in their Marans. But it's not uncommon to see featherless, lightly feathered and even heavily feathered.

And depending on how feathered the parents were your girl could be just not expressing it, or she is very light feathered and shes picking at them or she's clean legged.

Hope you get some lovely dark eggs from her. Mine normally start laying right around the 19-20 week range but with the decreased daylight hours has put off my BBS Black Silver girl at 27 weeks now.
I've got 4 BCM pullets getting close at 16 weeks now but I'm about to turn lights on so hopefully that will kickstart them in the next few weeks.
