What breed is this rooster?

Hi, last night a stray rooster appeared out of nowhere. We have only 1 neighbor and they don't have chickens. We think he is a rooster and and I think he is a young one too. Sorry he looks super skinny, probably hasn't ate anything. If someone could tell me what breed he is so we can understand him more that would be great!

Don't know but he is a cool looking dude! Every summe roosters show up around here- I'm pretty sure folks are just dropping them off. Really sad.

He is a somewhat bedraggled dark brown leghorn. It appears as if he has been through a bad spell. He'll be a beauty when you get him back in condition. Leghorns of all varieties are my favorite chickens - to me there are none more attractive.

I'm guessing brown leghorn but I'm sure someone else will chime in.

It's really too bad this practice is done but so many people buy straight run chicks without planning for a possible cockeral or they buy sexed pullets and one or more are wrongly sexed. I know it happens but people are so ignorant. That cockeral they raised can not survive on his own, dropping him off may bring diseases to other flocks and it's cruel. If he hadn't found you he'd have starved or frozen depending on your location. Or he would have become food for a predator.


Btw quarantine him for two weeks if you can.

Same with any domestic animal most will not survive when dumped and people who do this should not own animals.

I know many people are attached to the birds they raise. I myself feel that way but I would never drop off a cockeral or roo we didn't want somewhere. We raise and process all of our own spare cockerals. I know not everyone agrees with this either but they have good lives with purpose and good kind ends. If nothing else give the bird away free on Craigslist and say do with it what you will, I just don't want to know.

Also we live in the country and people from the city also drive out of town and drop stuff on country back roads that they don't want to be responsible for disposal of. Couches mattresses you name it I've seen it. It's a stupid dangerous practice for wildlife and for people as stuff is often left in the middle of the road at night.

Where do they think the bags of trash and yard waste and their other junk go? Does the couch move itself?

What do they think happens to the animals they dumped? Do they think they're wild and free and I don't know it's dead so it must be alive?

Come on people, think. Most trash collection places have one day a month they'll take big items, or pay ten dollars to take it to the dump instead of 20$ in gas to drive it out in the country.

Sorry rant over.

People who dump animals upset me so much and people who dump other junk that can hurt animals or other people make me angry.

Wow thanks everyone! He sure looks nice and thanks for the clarification. He has no injuries and eats and drinks right. It is upsetting to see animals being dumped like that. So should I separate him and give him some mediated food or just normal flock raiser? He is already with the other chickens but keeps his distance. Maybe I should keep him inside until he gets back to his knees.

Quarantine for a month to see if he has any diseases.
When I quarantine I use medicated feed but I dont think it matters.

Quarantine is generally a good idea. That being said, your birds have already been exposed to him so not certain what it might achieve. Hopefully he is in good health.
