What breed is this?

From what I've read the Sussex as a breed is very old "one of the oldest British breeds". And the original Light Sussex birds were bred by crossing with Brahmas and Cochins. So I suppose that's why some slight leg feathering pops up sometimes.
The speckled Sussex is really old, but I think the light came about later on. I read somewhere that Barred rocks were used in the original crosses but obviously some feather legged breed must have played a part. It's strange how little is known about the creation of many of our breeds and varieties but I find it interesting to learn as much as possible.

Whatever it is it's a nice, healthy looking hen. That's the main thing in my book.

Hi Jed! Honest question- do pullets ever have pointy saddle feathers at any stage in their life? I thought I read on hear cockerels didn't start to show them till about 12 weeks or so but I think I see pointies on this bird. Post 7. Pic quality is great so it's not fuzzy when I blow it up on my phone. OP said this bird was only around 9 weeks. Its also same size as her 5 month old so going to be a big bird regardless.

No, pullets don't have pointy saddle feathers and neither do hens, except very rarely in Phoenix chickens, which this bird definitely is not. I can't see anything in picture 7, though, even when it's blown up. The feathers just look slightly ruffled. While I think it is probably a pullet, large breeds are slow to develop and sometimes you will get a late blooming cockerel, so you're not totally out of the woods. But at this point I am seeing nothing that says cockerel.

That was the first thing I noticed when @Chickenleg123 posted new pics.
