What breed is your favorite in your flock?

I love my barred Plymouth rocks. They are very friendly with me. They are my favorite so far. My sapphire gems are sex linked and I’ve already had one die before she was a year old. They are very skittish but good layers. I’d not get the gems breed again.
I do have 2 sapphire gems, one is very easy to approach and pick up, and the other one is completely opposite! She won’t let me touch her! They are very pretty tho!

In my flock, my EE is the sweetest and most outgoind, then my barred rock. This is because I had worked with them a lot so that I can train them for a school project. Since I did not work well with my blue jersey giants, they are not the friendliest, but they are friendlier than any other bird that I have not worked with as they would chase me around and jump for food as long as that food was mealworms(which I know is not very healthy, so they rarely ever get any). My neighbor has even sweeter birds, they have one golden comet and 2 ISA browns(I think), they are super sweet! They are probably my favorite for sweetness, but my favorites are my blue jerseys. I will be working more with my Jerseys as chicks. Good luck with your birds! Hope you find the right birds for you!
Thanks so much! I have been reading everything I can on the friendliest chicken breeds, and there’s alot of mixed reviews. That’s why I took to this forum to get honest answer

My top 4s are (not in order, I can't rank them any more than this):

Cornish bantams (highly, highly, highly recommend). They're cute, reliable layers and unappreciated as a good broody. Only downside is they're not super cold tolerant.

Araucana. Decently friendly, blue eggs and they're just neat looking with tufts and no tail. Downside is they're hard to hatch and harder to get.

Pheonix. Super bird of broodies, great rangers and just pretty. Downside is they don't do great being super confined.

Marans. Pretty eggs and my pair are sweethearts so far. Downside is that they were super popular, which means they're not consistent in appearance or quality anymore. I got super lucky with where I got mine
Thanks for this!

I was wondering what breed of chicken is your favorite one in your flock? By favorite I mean who is always looking for cuddles or just eager to see you, who lays eggs most consistently and who gets along with others….
I want a diverse flock but I want my flock to be friendly. I see them more as pets and producers of eggs. So who’s YOUR best breed ??
Thanks !
In this order for me !!!
Crested Cream Legbar
Cuckoo Maran
Splash Orpington
Buff Orpington

I have experienced two flocks in my life, and both have been all Buff Orpingtons (with the exception of my current rooster.) I adore them (so much so that I've missed out on the other breeds!), but would also reiterate that you'll get a broad range of personalities within even a single breed. My heaviest girls do seem to end up the most placid on average, while the skinny girls are adventurous and a bit feistier! So whether you do a large mix of breeds or just one or two you love the look/performance of, you'll have a lovely variety of personalities to enjoy regardless. :love

I have Rhode Island Reds and one Buff Orpington, named Gracie. She is my favorite. I give them a treat each evening when I let them out in the yard. When I open the shed door, she comes running and walks in and shows me where the treat bucket is. I have to be careful not to step on her as she is all around my feet, Lovely bird.

Hi there,

I've found some generally acknowledged sweet breeds to be mean, so I guess it really just depends on how much time you're willing to spend with them.

For egg production and sweetness, I think mutts are pretty wonderful. That being said, my favorite mutts come from a Plymouth Rock hen and a mutt rooster who has some Americauna, silkie, and wyandotte in him. I also love a Salmon Faverolles as a parent, and for a pure breed, they're almost unbeatable. :) Orpington hens are also sweet.

However, my current favorite are my Ayam Cemanis. They are the only chickens that I got this year that I didn't hatch myself. Bought them when they were a day old, and they are just the sweetest. I've heard their egg production isn't great (mine aren't laying age yet), but they're super friendly - even the roosters. They're also supposed to be great mothers, and even more broody than silkies. I hatched some more chicks while my cemanis and a few mutts were still in the brooder. They were about four weeks old and they took the new hatchers right in. Fluffed up like they were broody and everything.

Hope this helps!
