What breed of chicken produces the best eggs

I have a Buff orp and she lays a jumbo size egg my mom asks for those. She keeps asking me to get more chickens that lay only jumbo. lol My min pin Outlaw gets a bantam egg every morning for breakfast no one wants the little egg. He don't seem to mind at all.

I actually think my bantam eggs are the best. But all fresh eggs are so good. You would never eat another store bought egg if you don't have to. Did a taste test with first fresh eggs and store bought eggs. The diff. is amazing.

To missshepherdess, I also have comets they lay wonderful eggs and are my favorite chickens. So friendly.

I'm so glad I found this discussion because I have been wondering the exact same thing!

I'm also glad to see that Orpingtons have yummy eggs because that is one of the breeds I'm considering.

Has anyone tasted an egg from an Australorp? I don't see much about them in the discussions, but this is the breed I'm most interested in.

I have a Red X link and an EE. My EE hen is much larger but is not as dependable about laying. She lays about 5 days a week, whereas my Red has not missed a day since the first week she started laying.
That being said, Red's eggs are larger and brown, but are not as "salty" tasting as my smaller blue egg's I get from my EE. I prefer the taste of my EE hen's eggs, and their diet has to be almost exactly the same, so not sure why the taste diff.

I have both Australorps and Orpingtons. My Australorps lay a slightly smaller egg then the Orpingtons but have been more consistent layers especially in the heat of the summer.

My leghorn lays every day without fail. The others sometimes skip a day. she is a white leghorn and they have been good big eggs from day one! no pullet eggs from her! ErinM

I have cochins they lay a medium size brown egg. My DH was kind of iffy about eating eggs that came out of our chickens butts:p (I know that's where all eggs come from, go figure). Ater seeing the difference in color of the yoke and how good they taste he is gunhoe about it now.

Some of my hens are better foragers than others. In my flock, the australorps and australorp/EE mixes forage more, preferring to seek plants, bugs, seeds while the light brahmas tend to eat more from the feeder. Lazy eaters....

Its a personal thing, but I prefer the taste of dark orange-yolked eggs from the australorps to those of my brahmas. I don't have any orpingtons, so I can't make a comparison there.

If you want to choose a breed based on the foraging ability, try Henderson's Chicken Breed Chart
