Hi there.

I bought a bunch of chicks last summer/fall, but only have two of them now. They are both hens, and laying. The one was said to be a New Hampshire, the other a Maran. But looking at them more closely they do not look like that. The black hen(supposedly a Maran), has a peacomb and had a few feathers on her legs - which I removed. The New Hampshire may be purebred, but her colour does not seem exactly right. Any ideas?

The red one is a red sex link. The other may be a marans cross. What color egg does she lay? Perhaps she was an attempt at an olive egger cross.
Hm. That could be a possibility. The red hen looks much different than the red sex link, even though it doesn't look much different in the picture. I have had red sex link with her and they did not look the same. But it is possible.

French Marans have feathered legs. I would agree she could be a cross. My Marans don’t have large combs either but have copper neck feathers.
Okay. That is what I thought but she is just straight black. I think the feathers were just random ones, as I have had that in other hens as well that were supposed to have clean legs.
