I hatched 5 maran eggs I bought from a local Maran breeder, 3 are Black Coppers and 2 I'm not sure. They are 2-3 months old. What kind of Maran is this and I'm pretty sure its a roo, right?
Hi.
Don't buy from that person again IF quality is important to you.
Now, I don't wanna pick that handsome cockerel apart on the things that don't add up to the Marans standard. She may be running her colors together. MANY people or so called back yard breeders do not cull for faults in their stock. There actually is a "partridge" color in the Marans called something different (Golden Salmon & males don't LOOK partridge to me so I don't think that's it). Check out this site to see the standards and pics of others
VARIETIES. Meaning plumage color. Marans IS the
BREED. And just for fun... Marans is always said with the S at the end, as they hale from the French port town, Marans....

You can always ask them what variety it is supposed to be. I keep mine separate for breeding, but escapes and oops DO happen sometimes.
How long have had this bird (now I realize there are two) Their feathers are tore up... indicating lice or mites, some type of external parasite issues. Many of us have to treat for them since we free range our birds and they are unfortunately a part of the environment.
The stripes on wings... NOT pure black copper for sure. Not sure about other varieties. I think eye color is still developing. Ears too light.
When I made the decision to hatch, I knew not all will live forever... Them boys look tasty!

When the time comes of course.
Best wishes.
