So I am not new to chickens. I had them 8 years ago. All kinds, like 100 at one time as well as ducks. But now since I am only able to have 4 I need help deciding. I don't want one for meat. It would be mostly for laying purposes. I like the larger birds. I really would like to have a big friendly bird. I have my heart set on some lavendar or dark colored orpington. Someone help me decide. lol

I would get Orpingtons or Easter eggers

Why go for 4 of the same breed? I'd go for some variety if it was me. Easier to tell who's who, and more egg color variety.

Decisions, decisions. I definitely would get 4 different breeds. White leghorns let jumbo white eggs, black copper marans lay dark brown ones and of course Easter eggers lay beautiful shades of blue/green. All this talk has made me want to get more.😊 🐦🐤🐥

Orpingtons will do quite nicely. They do well in a smaller space. Since you are only allowed four. I am assuming they will be in a backyard. They are docile, friendly and from what I remember about mine. Are fairly quiet. They are big enough that they should not be able to fly over a normal height chain link fence.

I accidentally got brown leghorns last year and it was a very happy mistake! They are beautiful egg laying machines.

I can't think of any reason not to get Orpingtons if that is what you want. The lavender ones are now readily available from hatcheries, though expensive. The black ones are more rare, but you could substitute Australorps, which are basically black Orpingtons bred for egg production more than meat.
