What breed to choose?

I could be wrong, but I am going to assume that most chickens will make a fuss over laying an egg!

I second the orpington, my buff is very quiet, docile and while she's not cuddly, she doesn't often struggle while being handled. I find her a little boring myself, but I think they would make good family type birds ;)

Hi! I'm meeting with a lady at 6:00 p.m. at eastern standard time and I NEED some breeds that fit this description.

1. Friendly and easy to handle
2. Great egg layer
3. Works in all climates
4. Isn't TOO big
5. Easy to obtain

Thank you and again I NEED this at 6:00. I'm helping a lady get chickens.

Based on your criteria, I would recommend Black Sex Links (Black Stars). They are friendly and hardy (both cold and heat), egg laying machines. They are somewhat lighter and definitely have a better feed rate conversion that the Rhode Island Red and Barred Rock parent breeds, the are readily available at virtually all hatcheries and many feed stores, and they can be sexed by color at hatching (male chicks have a white spot on top of their black heads, the tops of female chicks' heads are solid black) so you will not accidently get any cockerels. I've raised Black Sex Links for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.
