It depends on breed and color pattern. We can tell most of the time in here at 7 or 8 weeks. But looking at an older bird without knowing what the comb/wattles and legs were like at that age can make things confusing. He definitely is a slow developer, but in general I think most cockerels tend to mature a bit slow.
It bothers me also, but I've been very happy with the quality of my brahmas that I got from MurrayMcMurray hatchery. But I still think hatcheries could produce much better quality birds if they tried. With hatchery birds, I guess that must be true nowadays. I'd be pretty sorely disappointed if I got a light Sussex with yellow legs or a Delaware with solid black feathers in the tail/hackle, myself. I completely understand when people are mostly interested in utility qualities if they don't care, but I think hatcheries could do so much better. It does bother me a bit.
I hope so as well. If you post again, try to get clear close ups of the saddle area, the tail, and the back. Those are the places where male specific feathering is the most obvious.I hope im right that its a pullet i cant keep roosters and i just got rid of my roosters yesterday.
Yeah, it really varies. Most hatcheries have decent representations of some or most of their breeds, but will have some that are lacking. So I can't blame any specific hatchery, really. And most of them outsource their eggs, anyway. I just wish they cared a bit more.It bothers me also, but I've been very happy with the quality of my brahmas that I got from MurrayMcMurray hatchery. As long as the egg production is good im happy.I agree. I'm not obsessed with having perfect birds, but I'd prefer good quality over a bird that is unrecognizable even though it's pure bred.
Yes, I agree. You will rarely or never get perfect birds from most hatcheries. But the breeds should be maintained to a level where you could bring them up to good quality birds with some breeding and selection. And a lot just aren't at that level.I agree. Gotta love those fresh, homegrown eggs. Nothing beats 'em.As long as the egg production is good im happy.
