What breeds are these Hens?

Are you looking at a different picture? It's a Welsummer, alright. A black star would be black with brown leakage on the head/neck/chest.

I know but i have welsumers they look like they have more gold to them and brown, and my black stars from last year look just like pic#2 .. but I could be wrong ..

Hi. welcome to BYC! :frow

While it's true there can be MANY variations among the same breed as far as shading goes... that pic is a Welsummer. I tried to view your Welsummer pic but got an error message. I would be MORE curious to see the Black Star that you say this Welsummer looks like.

Some Welsummers can be rather brassy (gold) but that's not desirable.

If your black stars aren't black, however, they're something else entirely. Black star is just a brand name for a black sexlink which the offspring of a red rooster paired with a barred hen to produce barred male and black female chicks. Many of the females have leakage but they are still predominantly black.

I agree that your Welsumer looks like a Welsumer. But your "black star" representation looks ALMOST like an EE. I have ZERO black star experience. But I would NOT confuse that mucked up black brown combo for the partridge of a Welsumer. As you become familiar with different feather patterns, it will become easier to tell apart. Funny, it looks more like a low quality Marans than Welsumer... BUT PLEASE don't take any of that as a put down to your perfectly awesome birds! :love And also, don't let this experience stop you from playing the breed gender game. It's so much fun and a great way to expand your knowledge and experience! :highfive:
