What breeds, new and not, are you planning on adding to your flock this year? What do you find appealing about them?
How many are you looking to add?

I myself am not adding new breeds. (Right.... Mhm. We'll see how that goes  )
Instead I'm planning to hatch from what I have. I would love to hear your plans, though!

More mixed breeds, because why the heck not? Okay really, because I think mixes are always fun and interesting.

More Old English Game Bantams :p Why? Because I love those tiny, hardy little guys :love

Red Sex Links. Why? They’re really sweet birds and lay really well.

Orpingtons. Why? Well, I like the look and disposition of them. But they’re still on the fence :)

I can't decide :barnie I have one hen that is notorious for going broody, so likely I will end up with whatever is available at the feed store when this happens again. I did decide that for this year I'm not going to worry about how many eggs she may lay, since I have a decent flock of layers, and my addition will be a fun factor addition (suited to my climate of course). I'd love to add a brahma or a polish or maybe a fluffy cochin or something that lays a colorful egg.

To be honest, I really want some Polish or true Ameraucana, but I don't have the room

I want a polish too! Have you seen frizzled polish? I can't look at one without laughing, which makes me think I need one in my flock just to cheer me up from time to time. Seriously, do a google image search of frizzled polish chicken and it will brighten your day!

I love the frizzled Polish! I personally enjoy the feel of frizzled feathers, but man they are high maintainance.

Really? I've never had a polish or a frizzled anything. Is it more challenging? I'm not a high maintenance chicken person, I feed em and leave em, and enjoy spending time with them while I work in the garden, but no daily snuggles or handling or anything like that.

I'm hatching from what I already have but I will be on the lookout for heritage turkey poults, muscovy ducklings, and guinea keets when I go to swap meets this spring. Also looking for silkie chicks and other bantams at feed stores this spring. I need birds that are vaccinated for Marek's disease but I don't want to have to meet minimum requirements that hatcheries set. I have gotten around a dozen layer breeds from Tractor supply and none of them showed symptoms of Marek's, which my flock is infected with, so I will assume they are actually vaccinated like the store claims. Good luck with your plans everyone.
