What breeds are you getting this year and why?

I plan on getting 15 chicks.
Exchequer LH, 2 welsummer, GLW SLW, light brown LH, 3 EEs, BCM, 4 mille fleur d'uccles and a male blue Ameracauna.
These are all new breeds. I love a colorful flock and egg basket.
The Ameracauna will be used to make future generations of EEs.
I'll just do barnyard mixes in future years by allowing a broody to hatch out replacements for me.
The d'uccles are coming just cuz they are so darn cute! :love

Really? I've never had a polish or a frizzled anything. Is it more challenging? I'm not a high maintenance chicken person, I feed em and leave em, and enjoy spending time with them while I work in the garden, but no daily snuggles or handling or anything like that.
Their feathers break and damage easy and in winter they need heat because they can't insulate themselves.

hmm... maybe no frizzles for me then. After you posted I started doing some reading and it also said they do not do well in snow (and cold) which is like 7 or more months of the year here (it can be below freezing any night of the year), there are so many fun breeds out there I'm sure I can add a breed or two without totally modifying my coop and running electricity etc. Maybe just a regular polish, they are goofy enough! I really want a brahma rooster, but I'm refraining from getting a rooster to keep the peace with my neighbors (though roosters are permitted). I have a few ducks that are loud enough for the whole flock. There are so many breeds out there with gorgeous roosters! Imagine what your flock would look like if you could have all sorts of roosters live peacefully together!

I am going more with some stronger layers. I need more eggs. I have found that I would rather have MEAT birds and Laying birds, than dual purpose birds...except for BO...love them.

So are you looking at production hybrids then? Personally I think there is something striking about an ordinary white leghorn. I think they'd suffer in my weather, however.

I have 4 more French black copper marans and 4 blue copper marans coming from a breeder in March, 4 golden laced polish coming in April from Cackle and currently have a broody silkie sitting on 10 eggs which are mostly mixes from my original flock. There are a couple silkie eggs, some EE eggs and a few cochin eggs.
This list will probably grow tho..... it is only January :lau
