Hah! They usually send me a male of the same breed as I ordered so I'm always surprised "where'd that rooster came from" when he started crowing. Hey, that gotta do somethin' with all those unwanted cockerels...
The first order I got from Ideal had a good mix. Mostly RIR, but also two EE, one Golden Phoenix, and one Cayuga duckling - all males. I already had these breeds in my regular order, which is why they included them as extras. The extra duckling was a really nice surprise.
My second order from ideal had about 22 RIR as packing peanuts. I had only ordered two goslings and one duckling in that order.
Well I got my chicks today and I got my answer for my packing peanuts! They sent me Black and Blue (possibly splash) Standard Cochins. Not bad for packing peanuts! I'd keep them all if they weren't all boys, oh well. We have decided to keep one, now just to pick one out
Do you have room to keep them a while and grow them out, and then pick which one you want to keep?
Sadly no, I have to pick it out now. Don't have the room.
Bummer! Just FYI, the one time I hatched large fowl Cochins, the chicks I thought for SURE were splash ended up being blue...the fluff was really light, much lighter than any other blue chick I've ever hatched, so don't let that fool you. Personally, I LOVE blue chickens, so that's what I would pick, plus that'll give you the most diversity in what color any mixed chicks end up being later on.
Do they usually send the amount of packing peanuts that it takes to get you to fill the quarter box? For instance, if you buy 10 chicks do they send around 15 extras to get you close to 25 or if you order 42 will they send about 8 to get you to 50?
