Are the Marans aggressive? Which ones have the best temperament?I have 13 RIRs, 4 BAs and 2 CMs. I got them for eggs. Thinking we might cull the marans and a couple of the bullies. We don't need so many eggs and would like to get numbers down a bit before winter.
Really? I thought they were a little on the aggressive side?Games are great birds some of the best around people.
The RIRs allow themselves to be held and pet. The Australorps are a little more skittish but come close for treats. Only one of the Marans comes up for treats. The Marans are the most timid, not aggressive. I would say the Australorps are more the bullies in my flock, two of the four in particular. One of my RIRs likes to push others around as well. Are the Marans aggressive? Which ones have the best temperament?
So if you could only pick one breed of chicken what would it be?The RIRs allow themselves to be held and pet. The Australorps are a little more skittish but come close for treats. I have 6 cream legbar pullets, 1 cream legbar rooster, 3 buff Orpington, 3 speckled Sussex, 3 barred rock, 3 white Ostra and 3 black copper Karan's.....What breeds of chickens, ducks, turkeys, and other fowl do you have? Do you have a large flock or small flock? What's your favorite breeds? Why does everybody have their chickens for? I can research, and read all about different breeds, but nothings better than real advice and opinions from real people. Thanks!
It's so hard to pick one eh! I've been asked a few times and it's almost impossible. I would probably say a couple of the mixed breeds I have. I have a Delaware cross pullet, and a bantam buff brahma cross that I really like. The "Breeder" told me they were those breeds, but they're definitely mixed with something. If I had to pick one breed for eggs probably the golden comets (which is another cross). RIR would be my pick for a purebred.Oooh, only pick one? I had a couple barred rocks I just loved, and a buff orpington which was nice, too. I had a leghorn I was quite fond of. She would ride on my shoulder while I did chores. But to pick one breed is difficult. The leghorns I've always heard are more flighty and mine was the exception so if you want something to hold that's probably not the way to go.
My previous flock was more for enjoyment than for eggs so my opinion is different now than if you would have asked me before. This time around eggs are my first priority to support my hobby. My close second reason for picking which breed is how social they are with me. I'm going to have to go with the RIRs.
But if you want pets first, eggs second I would say BOs or BRs. Sorry, I can't pick just one. Don't ask which is my favorite M&M.
