What breeds should I get?

I don't like extra toes, and I don't like breeds that fly. but that's about it.

Then the most common brown egg layers should be good choices. They're heavy enough that they don't fly well, and they don't have extra toes.

That would be sexlinks (black or red/gold, which get called ISA Brown, Red Star, Gold Comet, and many other names)

Also Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, White Rocks, and a few others.

You could get one each and have a flock of colorful birds that lay well.

The less common breeds of brown egg layers (Wyandottes, Orpingtons, other colors of Rocks, Speckled Sussex, and so forth) can also be good layers, but usually not quite as good as the more common ones--the best layers are common specifically because they do lay so well.

In general, chickens that lay blue, green, or dark brown eggs do not lay as many eggs. The ones that lay white eggs often lay well but also fly well. Bantams tend to be both the best fliers AND the poorest layers, so they are really not what you want.

Get Buffs, EE's, Sex links are fun but tend to have more egg laying related issues. Silver and Golden Laced Wyadottes, are also fun! That is basically all the breeds I have, other then RIR, and a Barred Rock! 😄 I have 15 chickens, but boring breeds! RIR's are good layers, but not very exciting. And if you plan on getting anything with a fluffy head or body, or yo already have one, you may not want to get RIR. RIR's are attracted to fluffy things, and and may peck breeds such as Polish. I have heard this, but don't have any fluffy breeds, so have never experienced it myself.
