What breeds should I get?

I am just starting out with chickens and I want about 10 good laying hens but I don't know what type i should get. I also want some chickens with a little funk to them.

Any ideas?

Hi Tbone101--

Depending upon what you want from your chickens.... here are some thoughts:
1. If you want layers, consider gold sexlinks, golden comets. These are a hybrid chicken that is friendly, sweet tempered, easy to keep, lays huge brown eggs and remains small, thus you have a good feed conversion ratio - spending less on feed and getting a lot of great eggs. There are other sexlinks that go by other names... Should you choose this route, you will know you definitely have pullets and no surprise roosters if you start with chicks. 2. If it is important to you to get layers from which you can determine which hen laid which egg, get a mixture of breeds that lay different colors of eggs. Here is a reference: http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chooks.html

3. Depending upon exactly what you mean by funk..... this forum is definitely the place to search to find just what you are seeking, (and the internet too)--- If you want beautiful feathers, odd chickens, rare chickens... they will all be represented here on the forum---and you will encounter people who know tons about chickens.
