What can break through chicken wire?

Ya those are hog "panels". They are stout but holes are too large for effective predator proofing.
That's why I asked about "pig wire" was curious about the hole size.

:lau Can you buy it in rolls cause those 16' panels are a b!tch to haul home if you don't have a trailer.
I think you can get 4' x 8' and 3' x 6' and possibly others. I know Lowes carries a roll but they don't call it hog wire or panel and I doubt it is the exact same thing or it probably would not roll up, but it is fairly heavy duty.

Yes, if I used it I would still use hardware cloth over it. I use a dog pen encased with hardware cloth and it has been effective. I do not deal with bears, though. We have them but not a large population but they are gaining steam so one day I may. Then, it would be time to turn the juice on.

Only electric fencing, very hot and baited, will keep bears out.
Anything is better than nothing, but starting with best will be worth it over time.
A small run, well done, is your fall-back plan when the birds are threatened by an active predation situation.

So you have hardware cloth on your run and then another layer of bigger wire fencing on top of it? Wouldn’t the hardware cloth along suffice?

I live in a heavily predator populated area. I put welded wire on the floor of my coop, screwed to inside walls, then concrete paving stones on that and heavy sand on that. Now covered in pine chips. Also have metal pieces that look like a big combs to pound into the ground around perimeter of building. Best deterrent is Great Pyrenees I rescued about 4 months ago. Not long ago he killed a racoon and just last week I found a possum he had killed next to the coop. Good luck!
