What can I add to increase protein in Quail feed..

I know this thread is old, however I have run into the problem with not finding high enough protein feed for my quail. I currently use a organic chick starter with only 20% Protein and it is expensive. I wanted a high protein supplement that would be high enough to raise protein content. I learned recently that feeder roaches are high in protein with not much fat. So adding a few roaches a day boosts protein up closer to 25-30% I found an article online after doing a search and finding this forum about "What Feeder Roaches I can add to increase protein in my Quail Feed" Since Mealworms are high in fat. I bought a Dubia Feeder Roach Colony Kit and a Red Runner Roach Colony and they reproduce quick enough for me to feed to my quail on a regular basis and cut my supply costs. My chicks go crazy at healthy snack time! There are some grasses that are high in protein as well and I am looking into them as well.

To not stray too far away from poultry feed of some sort, I would probably add some bone meal or extra soy in with the feed. Both are excellent protein sources. Because, you're just trying to get the protein levels up, you don't have to use a lot of it. You would have to do your own calculations but, I would imagine 5 parts feed to 1 part soy. That should raise your levels to the desired amount. Check with your local feed mills and they usually have somebody who can advise the best options.

I checked into soy sources and had a hard time finding Non-GMO Organic sources in the quantities needed which is what I am interested in. I figured I can feed my roaches much less grain and then feed off the roaches to the quail with a protein boost at much less cost. I like your idea of the bone meal and will look for an organic source.
