Even more important than getting something to grow there is having adequate ventilation. If there is not much air movement, that area is going to be an oven. I'd do deep composting litter and call it a day.

Thanks @lazy gardener I am trying to do the deep litter inside. The area I was wanting to plant for them will be outside - under the storage area I am building on the side of the coop (where a nest box usually sits) so air there is not an issue - sunlight will be. It just looked like a great place to plant something - hopefully once I get more built - it will not look that way and I will let it go!Even more important than getting something to grow there is having adequate ventilation.
