What causes crooked toes?

I got a batch of chicks this spring and several have crooked toes. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this would occur? Is it a nutritional thing or something to do with the incubation process?

1. High or low incubator temperature.
2. Inadequate nutrition.
3. Smooth bottom hatching trays.

Thanks Al. I thought I had read somewhere that it was something to do with incubation. I will read the link and see what it has to say.
