What chicken do you guys think suits my needs?

Sorry I don`t have a photo and it is miserable and raining outside and my camera isn`t behaving for me. Picture a black Australorp with streaks of brown on the neck and on the face . Brown eyes which gives it a different look than the Australorp. It was a RIR rooster. Good layer. She is calm though not in a friendly cuddly way. I doubt I could catch her unless she was roosting. No broodiness yet. She is one year old now.

I picked her up today and shes the calmest of the buch... Mine is all like RIR with black speckles :p

I agree, from what I've read that the Black Austalorp would be a great pick. I read that they will lay year round and are nice birds. I also like the Easter Egger. Pretty birds with colorful eggs.

I love my dual purpose, heritage breeds. I like to have at least a couple that lay through winter without supplemental lighting. My FMs and SFs do the trick. I'd like to try Dorkings next.....

does anyone know how long it is before breeds such as the australorp and plymouth rock start laying?

I'm sorry, an FM is French Marans... there are two types, the French has feathered leg shanks and the American has clean leg shanks....

My rhode island red lays nice jumbo sized eggs and so do my EE's.

They barely fit in my large size carton. Both breeds lay everyday and are very docile sweet birds.
